A psychological evaluation with a parenting component assesses the evaluee’s cognitive and personality and emotional functioning and includes additional assessment tools that are aimed at gaining an understanding of the parent's abilities, psychological resources, and potential risks of safety.
Comprehensive Assessment Tools: We utilize a range of validated assessment tools to gather information about various aspects of parenting capacity, which may include:
- Quantitative Personality and Emotional Functioning Measures
- Parenting Skill Inventories.
- Risk assessments aimed at assessing safety.
Interviews and Collateral Information: We conduct a semi-structured interview with the parent under evaluation, as well as relevant individuals, when appropriate.
Review of Records: Additionally, we review all pertinent records sent to us such as medical history, school reports, child protective services records, police reports, and other legal documents to augment our understanding of the family's background and current circumstances. The evaluee's history is generally gained from self-report, treatment providers, and official legal documents (e.g., police reports, medical
records, previous evaluations). While other documents and written statements may also be reviewed as needed, we prioritize information that has been verified as reliable evidence and typically corroborated by multiple (and official) sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Written Report: Upon completion of the assessment, we furnish a detailed written report summarizing our findings, conclusions, and if applicable, recommendations for interventions, support services, and suggestions for enhancing parenting skills.
***It is important to note that a psychological evaluation with a parenting component is not the same thing as a comprehensive custody evaluation and does not generally include interactions with the minor children, home studies or observations of live parent-child interactions. As such, should not be the sole determinant of custody.
